Just a very inadequate tribute paid to one of the undisputed, yet sadly neglected, giants of international music. I was captivated at a very early age by the magic of Mantovani at first on 78 recordings and later by the magnificence of the Decca stereo recordings, especially his 'Golden Hits' album, which was the first stereo recordings of the master I heard and have ever since had many years of unalloyed pleasure and delight. I enjoyed the BBC Radio 4 documentary a few nights ago, it was a great privilege to hear Mantovani being interviewed, but also very harrowing to hear of his sad physical decline. I was left with the distinct impression that although at his peak he was possibly the most consistently popular recording artist in the world, he remained an unassuming and modest man and indeed one of great humility. I would like to thank him for the enormous listening pleasure he has given me over so many years and will continue to give me for the rest of my life. The only regret I have regarding Mantovani is that he didn't leave us with many more recordings, but this is all the more reason for us to cherish the performances we have. Thank you Mantovani for lifting my spirits during so many bad times, although your sound may be stilled by the expiry of life, it is a sound that will undoubtedly live forever.
